Syllabus of Power BI

Module 1 : Introduction to Power BI
  • What is Power BI?
  • Power BI components: Desktop, Service, Mobile, Gateway
  • Installing Power BI Desktop
  • Power BI Interface Overview
  • Assignment:
    i)  Install Power BI Desktop
    ii) Explore the interface and create a sample report using sample data (e.g., Excel or CSV) 
  • Connecting to different data sources (Excel, CSV, Web, SQL)
  • Power Query Editor basics
  • Data cleaning: remove columns, filter rows, change data types
  • Merging and appending queries
  • Assignment:
    i) Load a dataset from Excel
    ii) Clean and transform the data (remove nulls, rename columns, change types)
    iii) Merge two datasets (e.g., Sales and Products)
  • Relationships between tables
  • Star schema vs Snowflake schema
  • Creating calculated columns and measures
  • Introduction to DAX (Data Analysis Expressions)
  • Assignment:
    i) Create a data model with at least 3 related tables
    ii) Define relationships and create a few calculated columns and basic DAX measures (e.g., Total Sales, Profit Margin)
  • Creating visuals: bar charts, line charts, pie charts, tables, cards
  • Using slicers and filters
  • Drill-through and tooltips
  • Custom visuals from marketplace
  • Assignment:
    i)   Build a dashboard with at least 5 different visuals
    ii)  Use slicers to filter data by region or category
    iii) Add a drill-through page for detailed analysis
  • Advanced DAX functions: CALCULATE, FILTER, ALL, RELATED
  • Time intelligence: YTD, MTD, QTD, Previous Year
  • KPI indicators
  • Assignment:
    i)  Create measures for YTD Sales, Previous Year Sales, and Sales Growth %
    ii)  Add KPIs to your dashboard
  • Publishing to Power BI Service
  • Creating dashboards in Power BI Service
  • Sharing reports and dashboards
  • Row-level security (RLS)
  • Assignment:
    i)   Publish your report to Power BI Service
    ii)  Create a dashboard and share it with a peer
    iii) Implement RLS for different user roles
